Accountants in Swansea
Swansea is Wales's second city, with a university-driven digital sector and a coastline that brings a serious visitor economy with it.
The business base in Swansea
Swansea's business base is broader than its industrial past suggests. Two universities anchor a digital, software and life sciences sector, and around them sits a substantial professional services economy — law, accountancy, recruitment, consultancy — much of it owner-managed. Waterfront and city centre regeneration has added leisure, events and hospitality to that.
The Gower and the coast bring tourism with a genuine season, and the marine and energy work around Swansea Bay adds a project-based dimension. For most owner-managed firms in the city the practical question is not the tax rate — Welsh rates currently match England's — but how the owners take money out and whether the premises are costing more than they should.
How we work with businesses in Swansea
Buzz has no Welsh office, and we would rather say that plainly than put a rented address on a page to look local. Work runs by phone, video call and WhatsApp, with a named accountant rather than a call queue, unlimited questions at no hourly charge, and FreeAgent included.
Swansea has enough scale that competition for accountants is real, so what matters is whether the work goes beyond compliance rather than whether the firm is round the corner.
What we do for Swansea businesses
Owner-managed service businesses, university-linked companies, and a hospitality trade with a season.
- Owner remuneration — salary and dividends planned together with the personal position, rather than decided the week before the deadline
- R&D relief assessed honestly — including saying so when a claim would not stand up, which is worth more than one that unravels later
- Business rates and reliefs — the Welsh multipliers and Small Business Rates Relief checked against the bill, because the retail multiplier is worth a great deal and is not always applied
- Seasonal hospitality — management accounts by month, so the season and the winter are two facts rather than one average
- Management accounts and forecasting — the numbers that let you decide something, produced while the decision is still open
Questions we get asked in Swansea
Do the Welsh income tax rates cost me more than England?
Not at present. The Welsh rates are set at 10p in each band for 2026-27, which produces exact parity with England and Northern Ireland — a Welsh taxpayer on £50,000 pays what an English one pays. The C at the front of a Welsh tax code is currently the only visible difference. The power to diverge exists and Scotland has used its equivalent extensively, so it is worth knowing the mechanism, but nothing has changed yet.
Is our rates bill right?
It is worth checking, because Wales runs three multipliers and the gap between them is large. For 2026-27 the retail multiplier is 0.350 and the standard one is 0.502, so on a rateable value of £40,000 that is £14,000 against £20,080 for identical value. Small Business Rates Relief gives 100% up to £6,000 rateable value, tapering to nothing at £12,000, and is applied automatically rather than on application.
We are a small software business. Does R&D relief apply to us?
Sometimes, and the test is narrower than the cold-callers suggest. It asks whether you were resolving genuine technical uncertainty rather than building something difficult but well understood. Plenty of good software work does not qualify. We will tell you plainly where you sit, because HMRC's scrutiny of these claims has tightened considerably and a claim that fails costs more than it ever paid.
