Working with Hertfordshire businesses

A county that earns in London and lives here

Hertfordshire has one of the highest concentrations of London commuters in the country, and it shapes the businesses in it. A large share of our local clients bill London day rates from a desk in Hertford, Ware or Bishop’s Stortford — consultants, IT contractors, agencies and professional services firms whose customers are in the City but whose overheads are not.

That mix throws up questions a generalist accountant tends to answer badly: whether a contract sits inside or outside IR35, whether to run as a sole trader or a limited company once the day rate climbs, what is genuinely claimable when you work partly from home and partly at a client site, and how to take money out of a company without paying more tax than you need to.

Alongside that sits the county’s other economy — life sciences and tech around Stevenage and Welwyn, film and studio work near Elstree and Leavesden, and a long tail of trades, retailers and family businesses serving towns that have grown fast.

What local clients ask us most

  • Am I inside or outside IR35 on this contract?
  • Should I be a limited company at this day rate?
  • What can I claim working from home and on site?
  • Salary or dividends — what leaves me most?
  • When do I have to register for VAT?
  • What do I do about Making Tax Digital?
Who you actually deal with

You get Peter, not a call centre

Peter Allen is our co-founder and financial director, AAT licensed, and Hertford is his base. Local clients deal with him directly rather than being routed through whoever picks up. That is the whole point of a small practice, and it is the thing most owners say they lost when their last accountant grew.

A named accountant

The same person every time, who already knows your business and does not need the background explaining again.

A price agreed up front

Fixed monthly fee, agreed before any work starts. No hourly billing and no invoice for asking a question.

Answers the same week

Not a set of accounts nine months after your year end, by which point every decision has already been made.

The full service

Everything a Hertfordshire business needs, in one place

Being a small local practice does not mean a small service. Buzz runs accounts, tax, payroll, bookkeeping and advisory across the group, and Hertford clients get all of it.

Accounts and tax

Year-end accounts, corporation tax, self assessment and the filing that goes with them.

Bookkeeping

Xero and FreeAgent, kept current through the year rather than reconstructed in a panic.

Buzz Business Pulse

Monthly management numbers and a rolling cashflow, so you can see the year coming rather than reading about it later.

Virtual Finance Team

A whole finance function without hiring one — bookkeeper, management accountant and financial director between us.

Tax planning

Planned before the year end, when something can still be done about it.

Across the county

Serving businesses across Hertfordshire

Hertford is the base, but the work is county-wide and most of it happens by video call and WhatsApp anyway. We act for businesses in Ware, Hoddesdon, Broxbourne, Cheshunt, Bishop’s Stortford, Stevenage, Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, St Albans, Watford and the villages between them — and, through our other offices, right across England and Northern Ireland.

Questions

Common questions from Hertfordshire business owners

Do I have to come into the office?

No. Most clients never do — everything works by video call, phone and WhatsApp. If you would rather meet in person, Peter is in Hertford and happy to.

I contract into London. Does that change anything?

It changes the questions rather than the service. IR35 status, how you take money out and what you can claim across two work locations all matter more for you than for a purely local business. We deal with that mix constantly.

What does it cost?

A fixed monthly fee agreed before anything starts, based on what you actually need. The packages are set out here with the numbers on the page.

How hard is it to switch?

Straightforward. We write to your current accountant, collect the records and handle the handover. You approve one letter and that is largely your part done.

Based in Hertfordshire and looking for an accountant who does more than the basics?

Twenty minutes with Peter, no charge and no pitch. You will get a straight answer on what you should be paying and what you should be getting for it.
