What is in it

The six areas that decide whether the business can run without you.

For each one: how you can tell yours is weak, what it is costing you while it stays weak, and the one thing to do first. Then eighteen questions and a score out of 54.

Every number in it is worked out in full, on a firm about the size of yours. Put your own figures in and the answer changes, but the shape of it does not.

What the report covers

Six areas, and the one to fix first

Strategy

The work you want, and who you want it from. Why the second half is the half that makes the money.

Numbers

Deciding on figures or on feel, and the 21-month gap most owners make decisions across without realising.

Customers

Why one large customer is not a risk you carry. It is a price you pay, in every negotiation.

Delivery

The reason hiring people can lower your ceiling instead of raising it.

Systems

Two firms, identical profit. One can be handed over for a fortnight. The other cannot.

Team

Whether people bring you problems or decisions, and why that is not about attitude.

Who wrote it

Andy Jackson

I’ve worked with business owners for years, and it’s nearly always the same story. Somebody sets up on their own, works harder than they ever did for anybody else, and five years on they’ve built something that can’t run for a fortnight without them. The accounts look fine. They’re shattered.

That’s what the report is about. It came out of a book I wrote called Business 2.0, and it’s the same six things I go through with owners when we coach them.

We’re Buzz Accounting. We took over J A McClements & Co on the Fenaghy Road in Ballymena.
