What it scores

Six areas, and the one to fix first

Strategy

The work you want, and who you want it from. Why the second half is the half that makes the money.

Numbers

Deciding on figures or on feel, and the 21-month gap most owners make decisions across without realising.

Customers

Why one large customer is not a risk you carry. It is a price you pay, in every negotiation.

Delivery

The reason hiring people can lower your ceiling instead of raising it.

Systems

Two firms, identical profit. One can be handed over for a fortnight. The other cannot.

Team

Whether people bring you problems or decisions, and why that is not about attitude.

What you get back

A number, and something to do about it.

You get a score out of nine for each of the six areas, a score out of twenty-seven for each of the three freedoms, and your overall score out of 54. Every area comes with what lifts it and how you will know it is working.

It arrives by email so you have it to work from, and you can score again in three months to see whether the quarter moved anything.

What your score means
  • 0–18You own a job

Not an insult, and very common. It is also the most fixable position here, because little has been built that would have to be undone.

  • 19–36A business in parts

Some of it runs and some of it is still you. Where most owner-managed firms sit, and where the gap between working hard and getting somewhere is widest.

  • 37–48Mostly a business

It would survive you being away and it is worth something to somebody else. The remaining gaps are worth naming rather than living with.

  • 49–54This is a business

If it also pays you properly and you enjoy it, there is nothing here you need from us.

Andy Jackson
Who wrote it

Andy Jackson

I’ve worked with business owners for years, and it’s nearly always the same story. Somebody sets up on their own, works harder than they ever did for anybody else, and five years on they’ve built something that can’t run for a fortnight without them. The accounts look fine. They’re shattered.

That’s what the six areas are about. They came out of a book I wrote called Business 2.0, and they’re the same six things I go through with owners when we coach them.

We’re Buzz Accounting. We took over J A McClements & Co on the Fenaghy Road in Ballymena.
