The business base in Omagh

Omagh has a significant public sector and healthcare presence, a strong agricultural hinterland, and a base of construction, retail and professional services businesses serving a wide rural catchment.

West of the Bann, distance is a real business factor. Serving a wide rural catchment means travel costs, vehicle decisions and pricing that has to absorb getting to the customer. It also means more owner-managed businesses where the owner is doing the books at the kitchen table on a Sunday — which is exactly the situation Making Tax Digital is about to make harder.

Getting to us, and us getting to you

About an hour and a quarter from Ballymena. Video and phone for most things, which for this distance suits everyone better.

West of the Bann the drive is real, so we work the way our Omagh clients work — video, phone and WhatsApp, with in-person kept for when it earns the journey.

What we do for Omagh businesses

Serving a wide rural catchment costs money before you've earned any. Most of what we do here is about making sure that's priced in and claimed for.

  • Mileage and vehicle costs — flat rate or actual running costs, decided on the vehicle and the usage — and the answer differs between a sole trader and a company.
  • Making Tax Digital readiness — including digital exclusion exemptions, which exist for genuine connectivity and accessibility reasons but have to be applied for.
  • Farm accounts — averaging, herd basis and machinery allowances for the agricultural base across the district.
  • Construction and CIS — monthly returns and subcontractor statements handled so the deadlines stop being yours to remember.
  • Honest advice on whether you need us — if you're a small sole trader with simple affairs, good software and an hour a year may genuinely be enough. We'll say so.

Common questions

Questions we get asked

I'm rural and my broadband isn't great — does MTD still apply?

Yes, though HMRC has digital exclusion exemptions for people who genuinely can't comply for reasons including connectivity, disability or age. They have to be applied for and they aren't automatic. If you think you might qualify it's worth raising early rather than assuming either way.

Can I claim for the mileage I do covering a big area?

Yes, and for a rural business it's often one of the larger deductions. Whether you claim the flat mileage rate or actual running costs depends on the vehicle and how much of the use is business — and the answer isn't the same for a sole trader and a limited company. Keep the records either way; that's what usually lets people down.

Is it worth having an accountant if I'm a small one-person business?

Honest answer: not always. If you're a sole trader well under the VAT threshold with simple affairs, you may be fine with good software and an hour of advice a year. Where it starts paying is at incorporation, VAT registration, a first employee, or when MTD turns one annual job into five. We'll tell you which side of that you're on.
