The business base in Lisburn

Lisburn has a broad base — manufacturing, retail, professional services and construction — and functions substantially as a commuter city for Belfast, which supports a large population of small professional and consultancy businesses.

That commuter-belt professional base produces a particular client: the contractor, consultant or small professional firm working through a limited company. The recurring questions are salary versus dividend, IR35 status where the work is for larger clients, and whether the company structure is still the right one as rates and thresholds shift.

Around fifty minutes down the M2 and round. Straightforward either way.

Straightforward run either way. Most Lisburn clients are contractors and consultants who'd rather do it on a call between jobs than lose a morning.

What we do for Lisburn businesses

A lot of Lisburn's business base is one person, a limited company and a professional skill. The questions that follow are always the same three.

  • Salary versus dividends — recalculated on current rates rather than advice from a few years ago, because the gap has narrowed considerably.
  • IR35 and status — who determines it, where the liability sits, and whether the reality of the engagement matches what the contract says.
  • Company versus sole trader — an honest answer on whether incorporation still earns its keep for you — for many people the tax difference is now close to a wash.
  • Contractor accounts and VAT — including whether the flat rate scheme still helps, which for many consultancies it no longer does.
  • Manufacturing and construction work — stock, contracts and CIS for the town's larger employers, handled alongside the professional client base.

Common questions

Questions we get asked

Salary or dividends — what's the right split now?

It's moved. The gap between taking profit as salary and as dividends has narrowed considerably with changes to dividend rates, allowances and corporation tax, so advice from a few years ago is often simply out of date. It's a calculation on your actual numbers, not a rule — and our salary and dividend calculator gives you a starting point.

Does IR35 affect me?

If you contract through your own company for medium or large clients, they determine your status and the liability sits with them or the fee-payer. For small clients, responsibility stays with you. Either way the underlying test is the same and it's about the reality of the working relationship, not what the contract says.

Is a limited company still worth it for me?

Less automatically than it used to be. For many people the tax difference between trading as a sole trader and through a company is now close to a wash, and the company brings filing obligations, public accounts and cost. It still wins on liability, credibility and flexibility for some — but it should be a decision, not a default.
