Working with North West businesses

The UK's fastest-growing business scene outside London

Our base sits in Salford's M5 postcode — minutes from MediaCityUK on one side and Manchester city centre on the other, which is a fair picture of the businesses we work with here: digital and media freelancers, tech contractors, trades, and family-run companies across Greater Manchester.

The North West has spent the last decade turning into a genuine alternative to London for starting and scaling a business — lower costs, a deep freelance talent pool, and a startup scene anchored by Manchester's tech and media employers. What that means in practice for our clients: things move fast, margins matter, and the owners who thrive are the ones who can see their numbers clearly enough to price, hire and invest at the right moments.

Same fixed pricing as every Buzz office — no regional tiers in either direction.

Who we work with in Manchester

Built for the North West's mix of sole traders, startups and growing companies

Sole traders & freelancers

Greater Manchester's freelance and consulting community is one of the fastest-growing in the North West. We keep bookkeeping and tax simple, so you can spend your time on client work rather than admin.

Startups & early-stage companies

Manchester's tech and digital scene has produced a steady stream of new limited companies in recent years. We handle company formation, first-year accounts and VAT registration properly from the outset.

Growing SMEs

The North West's SME base is expanding fast, and plenty of businesses reach a point where their current accountant can't keep pace. We're built for that stage — same fixed pricing, more support.

Landlords with local portfolios

Manchester and the wider North West have seen strong rental demand, and many clients hold property alongside their main business. We handle the property-specific reporting that comes with it.

PSC contractors & IR35

Contracting is common across Manchester's tech, media and professional services sectors. We keep your IR35 position clear so you're not caught out at year end.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions from Manchester business owners

Is pricing different for Manchester clients?

No. The same fixed monthly pricing applies across every Buzz office — no regional premium, no reduced service, no different tiers. Fees follow the work: transaction volume, VAT registration and scheme, payroll headcount, entities and the condition of the records we take over. That cuts both ways and is worth saying plainly — a Manchester business does not get a discount for not being in London either. What you get is a figure driven by what the job actually involves, agreed in writing before anything starts.

Do you only work with businesses in Manchester itself?

No. The Manchester base serves clients across Greater Manchester and the wider North West — Stockport, Bolton, Salford, Cheshire, Lancashire and beyond — and the work runs digitally, so distance from the M postcode makes no practical difference. If you would rather meet in person we will arrange it. Most clients never do, not because we discourage it but because an hour on video with the accounts open on screen tends to be more useful than an hour spent travelling to a meeting room.

What sizes and types of business do you work with here?

Sole traders and freelancers through to growing SMEs with staff, across the mix the North West actually has: trades and construction, manufacturing, professional services, hospitality and a substantial digital and creative base around MediaCity and the city centre. The packages flex as you grow so you are not switching accountant again in three years. Where we are not the right answer is a business needing a statutory audit or a full-time in-house finance function — we do not carry out audits, and we will say when you have outgrown outsourcing.

Do you deal with CIS and construction work?

Yes, and it is common across the North West. CIS verification, deductions and monthly returns are handled alongside payroll, and the domestic reverse charge applies to most construction services between VAT-registered businesses in the CIS chain — the customer accounts for the VAT instead of the subcontractor charging it. That changed the cash position for a lot of subcontractors, because VAT no longer sits in the account between quarters. The bigger question is usually employment status: getting a subcontractor wrong leaves the contractor liable for the PAYE that should have been deducted.

Can I switch from my current accountant easily?

Yes, and the awkward conversation is ours rather than yours. We write to your existing accountant for professional clearance and your records, take over the HMRC agent authorisation and set up software while we wait. Most handovers are done within a couple of weeks, with the delay almost always sitting at the other firm's end. Check the notice period in your existing engagement letter and make sure work you have paid for has been completed. You can move at any point in the year, though just after a year end is tidiest.

Do I need to meet in person?

No. Phone, video call and WhatsApp are the default, and it works well wherever you are based across Greater Manchester and the North West. In-person meetings can be arranged if you would prefer one, and some conversations genuinely go better face to face — a first planning session with two shareholders in the room, for instance. For routine work, a video call with the file open on screen beats a meeting room, and it means you get an answer this week rather than whenever diaries happen to align.

Which software do you support?

FreeAgent is included in every package at no extra cost, worth up to £330 a year. We are a Xero Gold Partner and support QuickBooks and Sage as well. If your current setup works and the records are clean, we will work in it rather than move you for the sake of it. A change is worth it when the software is costing time, cannot meet Making Tax Digital requirements, or is billing for a tier you never needed. See the software comparison.
