The standing hour nobody else in your life can give you.
Fortnightly ninety-minute sessions with a coach who has your numbers in front of them. Direct challenge on priorities and decisions, written actions with dates, and a ninety-day review against where you started.
- Fortnightly, ninety minutes
- Your numbers in the room
- Written actions with dates
- Reviewed at ninety days against your scores
- No long contract
- You do not have to be an accounting client
A standing hour with someone who is not on your payroll
Running a business is the only senior job where nobody reviews your thinking. Everyone around you either works for you, is married to you, or is selling you something. One-to-one coaching is the standing appointment where someone who knows your numbers asks the questions nobody else is in a position to ask.
It is not a course and there is no framework to be walked through. The agenda is whatever is actually in the way this month.
The shape of an engagement
- 1The first two sessions map the business
Where the money comes from, where it goes, what only you can do, and what you say you want the business to be for. Most owners have not written that down.
- 2Then a session every two weeks
Ninety minutes. Ten on what got done since last time, the rest on the thing that is actually blocking you.
- 3Written actions every time
With dates. Coaching without follow-through is an expensive conversation.
- 4A ninety-day review against your starting scores
Measured against the numbers you started with. If it is not moving, we change what we are doing or we stop.
And who it does not
- It suits you if
- You are the decision-maker, the business has revenue, and you are the constraint — too much depends on you and you know it.
- It suits you if
- You have grown past the point where instinct alone is enough and want your thinking pressure-tested before you commit to something.
- It does not suit you if
- You are pre-revenue and want a template. There are cheaper and better ways to get one.
- It does not suit you if
- You want the decision made for you. A coach who tells you what to do has given you an opinion. A capability is what you needed.
- It does not suit you if
- The business is in a genuine cash crisis. That needs a turnaround or insolvency specialist first, and we will say so.
The shape of a session
- 1Ten minutes on last time
What got done, what did not, and why not. The reason something did not happen is usually the most useful thing in the hour — it is nearly always that the task was unpleasant, unclear, or actually belonged to somebody you have not asked.
- 2Twenty minutes on the numbers
What moved since last time and what it says about the next quarter. If we do your accounts these are real figures rather than your impression of them, which changes the conversation completely.
- 3Forty minutes on the thing that is actually in the way
Whatever you brought. Usually a price rise you are avoiding, a person you need to have a conversation with, or a decision you have been carrying for a month.
- 4Twenty minutes turning it into actions
Written down, with dates and an owner, before you leave. An action without a date is a wish, and it will be the first thing on next session’s not-done list.
Scored, so progress is measurable
- You score yourself at the start
- Ten areas of the business out of ten, in the first two sessions: strategy, finance, marketing, sales, operations, systems, team, leadership, your own time, and resilience. Most owners have never sat down and done this, and doing it honestly is itself uncomfortable.
- The lowest scores are not automatically the work
- A four in marketing may matter less than a six in owner time, depending on what you said you wanted. We work on whichever score moves you towards what you said you wanted.
- Ninety days, then you score again
- Against the same ten areas, so improvement is a number rather than a feeling. It also catches the opposite: if nothing has moved, that is a conversation about whether this is worth your money.
- And an honest read on whether to continue
- Some engagements should stop at six months because they have done their job. Being told that is a feature of the arrangement rather than a failure of it.
What people ask about one-to-one business coaching
What does it cost?
The price is agreed on the discovery call and you leave that call with a specific figure. There is no price list because the five programmes involve different amounts of work. If the fee would stretch the business right now, say so — being advised to wait a quarter is a real outcome.
How long do people stay?
Plan for at least six months. The first two go on mapping the business and agreeing what good looks like, and the work that changes anything comes after that. There is no long contract.
Do I have to be a Buzz Accounting client?
No, and plenty of coaching clients use none of the other services. If we do your accounts, the coach can work from current figures rather than your description of them, which sharpens any conversation about margin or affordability.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes. Nothing said in a session goes to your team, to other clients, or into your accountant's file.
What if it is not working?
Say so, and we will change what we are doing or stop. The ninety-day review exists partly for this: if the scores have not moved and you cannot point at anything that has changed, continuing is not in your interest and we will not argue for it.
Can I pause it?
Yes. Sessions get moved rather than lost, and a genuine pause for a busy quarter is fine. What does not work is three cancelled sessions in a row, at which point we will suggest stopping properly rather than drifting.
Do I need my books up to date?
It helps a great deal. Coaching from real figures is a different conversation from coaching against your impression of them, and if your bookkeeping is months behind the first useful thing to fix is that rather than the strategy.
Who will I actually be working with?
One coach, the same one, agreed on the discovery call. You are not passed around, and if the fit is wrong after a couple of sessions say so and we will change it rather than have you quietly disengage.
