The days move to fit your payroll cut-off. Weekly payroll and client invoicing are part of the Finance Manager and Financial Controller levels, priced on the number of temps you pay.

One temp, one week

A temp works 40 hours on a pay rate of £14.00 an hour and a charge rate of £22.00.

Charged to the client (40 × £22.00)
£880.00
Temp’s pay (40 × £14.00)
−£560.00
Holiday pay at 12.07%
−£67.59
Employer’s National Insurance at 15% above £96 a week
−£79.74
Margin before pension
£172.67

19.6% of the charge. Pension, any invoice finance fee and your overheads come out of it.

An illustrative example. The business is invented and so is every figure. Holiday accrues at 12.07% of hours worked for irregular-hours workers (gov.uk). The £96 weekly National Insurance threshold and 15% rate are for 2026/27 (gov.uk).

Margin per placement, every week

The fee on a temp placement is the gap between the charge rate and the full cost of the temp. Holiday pay and employer’s National Insurance take a large share of that gap.

We report the margin on every placement, every client and every consultant each month, so you can see which rates to renegotiate when a contract renews.

Agency workers, umbrella companies and IR35

Equal treatment after 12 weeks

After 12 weeks in the same job, an agency worker qualifies for the same pay as a permanent colleague, plus automatic pension enrolment and paid annual leave. We flag each placement before it reaches week 12 so the pay rate and margin can be reset (gov.uk).

PAYE through umbrella companies

Since 6 April 2026, employment agencies or end clients are jointly and severally liable for the PAYE due when an umbrella company is in the supply chain. We keep a record of the umbrella companies you use and what you paid each one (HMRC policy paper).

Off-payroll working

Where a contractor works through their own company, the client usually decides their employment status. If the contractor is inside the rules and the agency pays them, the agency deducts tax and National Insurance. We run those deductions through payroll from the status determination statement (HMRC).

Invoice finance and debtor funding

Temps are paid every week, and clients pay on the terms in their contracts, so the agency pays out before the cash comes in. Invoice finance lends against the unpaid invoices to cover the gap.

The lender relies on your sales ledger. We keep it reconciled every week, send the ledger and the invoices in the format the provider asks for, and match each payment from the provider in Xero.

Buzz is not authorised by the FCA, so a recommendation of a particular lender or finance product is referred to an authorised firm.

Which level fits your agency

An agency paying a few temps a week usually starts with a Finance Manager. Once client payments need chasing and a lender or investor wants monthly figures, the Financial Controller level fits.

Questions from recruitment agencies

Can you run weekly payroll for temps?

Yes. We run temp payroll weekly from approved timesheets, with holiday pay and pension, and send each pay run to you to approve before the Full Payment Submission goes to HMRC.

Do you work with our recruitment software?

Tell us which timesheet or front-office system you use. We take the approved timesheets from it into payroll and into client invoices in Xero, so both come from the same hours.

Can you show margin by consultant?

Yes. If the placement records show which consultant made each placement, the monthly report shows margin by consultant as well as by placement and client.

Do you check IR35 status for our contractors?

The client issues a status determination statement for each contractor, and we make the deductions it calls for and keep each statement with the payroll records.

Can you help us move to invoice finance?

We prepare the sales ledger, the aged debtors and the forecast a provider asks for. A recommendation of a particular provider is referred to an authorised firm.
