Glasgow’s economy

Glasgow’s total output was £29.4 billion in 2024-25 (Glasgow City Council, Economic Development Annual Report 2024-25). The city has 2,440 businesses employing 10 to 49 people and 455 employing 50 to 249, including 210 construction firms and 155 manufacturers of that size (ONS, UK Business Counts 2026).

A finance director for a Glasgow company plans in Scottish tax as well as UK tax. Income tax on salaries follows the Scottish bands, Land and Buildings Transaction Tax replaces stamp duty on premises, and non-domestic rates are valued by the Scottish Assessors. Corporation Tax, VAT and National Insurance are the same as in the rest of the UK.

Buzz has no Scottish office. Glasgow clients work with Peter and the Buzz finance team by phone, video call and WhatsApp.

Builders and contractors can read about the finance director for construction firms, and manufacturers about the finance director for manufacturers.

Directors’ pay in Scotland

The higher rate of Scottish income tax starts at £43,663, against £50,270 in the rest of the UK (Scottish Government, 2026/27 bands).

Between those two figures a Scottish director pays 42% income tax and 8% employee National Insurance on salary. Dividends are taxed at UK rates in Scotland too. Peter sets directors’ salary, dividends and pension contributions in the annual plan, and checks them against the cash the forecast shows before each payment is made.

Income tax on a salary of £50,270

Scottish taxpayer
£9,095
Taxpayer in England
£7,540
Extra income tax in Scotland
£1,555

Dividends are taxed at the same rates on both sides of the border, so the split between salary and dividends is a different sum in Scotland.

Worked from the 2026/27 Scottish and UK bands. The full working is in our Scottish income tax guide.
