6 April 2027: New tax year, and Making Tax Digital extends

6 April 2027: the 2027/28 tax year begins, new rates and thresholds apply, and Making Tax Digital for Income Tax extends to sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £30,000.

Who it applies to

Is this you?

Everyone for the new rates. For Making Tax Digital: sole traders and landlords whose combined self-employment and property income was over £30,000 in the 2025/26 return, joining those over £50,000 who started in April 2026. A further stage for income over £20,000 is set for April 2028.

What has to happen

The detail

Under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax you keep digital records and send HMRC a summary every quarter from compatible software, then a final declaration after the year end, instead of one annual return. FreeAgent, which is included with Buzz, is compatible.

If you miss it

What it costs

Late quarterly updates earn penalty points, and a fixed penalty once the points threshold is reached. Source: gov.uk and Companies House guidance, checked September 2026.

What to do

Now

Check whether the £30,000 line catches you, and if it does, be on compatible software with the bookkeeping up to date before 6 April 2027.
